Clay has been traditionally used in Oaxaca for at least 2000 years. This has created a vast heritage that encompasses more than 50 towns, all of them with distinctive styles and techniques. Nevertheless, only in Santa Maria Atzompa glaze was adopted to add color and seal the piece’s surfaces. My first project in Oaxaca was dedicated to co-design and implement a high temperature kiln that enabled the Ruiz López family to use lead-free glazes and power their kilns using alternative energies.
